How a Bella Stone job runs

Five steps, one person accountable.

  1. 01

    Pick your material

Choose from our samples or walk the on site inventory and pull your specific slab from hundreds of colors.

  2. 02

    Mario templates it himself

The owner does all the measuring and templating, following the curves and imperfections of every wall so the fit is right the first time.

  3. 03

    Fabrication

Cut and finished in the shop. Seams are placed in the most inconspicuous spot the slab allows, and avoided entirely where the slab is big enough.

  4. 04

    Install

Set in place and finished on site, with quality, accuracy and a quick turnaround.

  5. 05

    Sealed and explained

Natural stone tops are sealed at installation. You leave knowing the water test and how often your material needs resealing.

The owner

Mario Montes

I am obsessed with the wonders of nature, the beautiful colors of stone and all the things I can accomplish with it.

Mario Montes, owner, Bella Stone, Inc.

Mario came to the United States from El Salvador in 1993 and went straight into the granite business in Boston, learning a new country, a new language and a new trade at the same time. He spent his first year commuting to a shop in Miami while he learned English, then came home to Massachusetts.

He worked for the same company until 1999, then bought one of their old machines by trading ten kitchens for it, found a place to install it, and opened his own shop. At its height he ran 19 employees and finished three kitchens a day. The 2007 crash hit the business hard, and his reputation for quality is what carried it through.

He later sold that company and moved his family to Jacksonville to keep doing what he loves in Northeast Florida. He still does every measurement and template himself, because that is where the accuracy comes from.

Questions we get every week.

How do I know when my granite needs resealing?

Do a water test. If water droplets soak in and darken the granite, it is due for a coat of sealant. Bella Stone seals your granite at installation, and after that it needs resealing every few years. Applying sealant takes about 10 to 15 minutes and the product is sold at any big box store.

Which material needs the least maintenance?

Quartz. It never has to be sealed and needs no routine maintenance, which is why it keeps growing in both homes and commercial jobs. Soapstone also needs no routine maintenance, though it will show scratching as part of its rustic character.

Is quartz really heat resistant?

Bella Stone offers quartz from at least 10 different manufacturers, all stain, scratch and heat resistant to 450 degrees F, and all carrying a manufacturer warranty. Quartz is roughly 97 percent crushed quartz with 3 percent resin binders and pigments, compacted under extreme pressure into a dense, nonporous surface.

Can I put marble in a busy kitchen?

You can, as long as you know what you are getting. Marble is relatively soft and porous. Bella Stone seals marble tops at installation with a heavy duty sealant, and it should be resealed about every 6 months. Sealed properly and on time, it resists staining, but sealing does not protect against scratching. Marble comes in polished and honed finishes.

Do you have slabs I can look at in person?

Yes. You can select your stone from our samples or from our on site inventory and pick your specific material from hundreds of slabs and colors. The shop is at 5151 Sunbeam Rd, Suite #20 in Jacksonville.

Who actually measures my kitchen?

Mario Montes, the owner. He does all the measurements and templating himself to keep the accuracy tight, following the curves and imperfections of every wall and finding an inconspicuous place for any seam that is needed.

What is the difference between travertine and marble?

Both are natural stone, but the difference is in how the rock formed. Travertine forms in hot springs and limestone caves, which is what creates the holes in the stone from carbon dioxide escaping. Marble sits in the metamorphic rock category. They behave differently and are treated with different tools.

How much does a countertop cost?

Pricing depends on the material, the availability, the country of origin and the size of the slab your job needs. A smaller slab can mean more seams and a different labor picture than one large piece.
